Lemmy is more than just a rock legend, he lived an incredible life and was a living legend whose influence transcended boundaries, here is my favourite video of Lemmy, here he is as the frontman of Motorhead.
known for his um,,, gritty voice, relentless attitude, and unmatched dedication to the music, Lemmy was more like a force of nature in the world of rock, Lemmy grew up in a time when music was starting to shift culturally in his early years he was captivated and inspired by Elvis, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, it wasn’t long before he started playing guitar and bass.
Lemmy had now set the stage for a career that would shape the future of rock and heavy metal, Lemmy’s first major musical endeavour was with the band Hawkwind in 1971. His unique voice and bass sound helped him carve out a distinct place in the band, here is my favourite Hawkwind with Lemmy song.
Lemmy’s career was cut short with Hawkwind and he was kicked out in 1975, apparently the reason was because he liked different drugs than the rest of the band, the rest of the band were hippies and liked acid, while Lemmy had a fondness for speed, I’m sure there were other reasons, but this is the story I found. Undeterred, Lemmy formed Motorhead, a band that would be forever linked with his name.
I remember the first time I heard Motorhead, people laugh when they hear me tell these stories like how do I remember the first time I heard these bands, well to be honest I have no idea why I remember but I do, the first time I heard Motorhead was when I was watching The Young Ones, a British comedy produced in the 80s that I as a young child thought was the best thing I had ever seen, during every show they would have a band on playing a song and one of the episodes they had Motorhead. here is the clip
Motorhead blended element of punk, rock and metal, very different to the style of Hawkwind Lemmy’s former band, Lemmy’s distinctive growl in his voice and bass relentlessly powered this unstoppable force, Lemmy’s love of hard and fast loud music earned Motorhead a reputation as one of the most ferocious and influential rock bands of the era.
The release of Ace Of Spades in 1980 marked Motorheads defining moment, thrusting them into the mainstream and solidifying Lemmy’s place and status as a rock icon, despite the bands success Lemmy never strayed from his no-nonsense philosophy, he remained authentic and larger than life for his entire life, he never succumbed to the pressure of fame or the expectations of the mainstream.
Outside of his music and probably the reason why most people respect Lemmy so much is because he lived an unapologetic life, He took everything to the extreme and lived by his own rules, he was a hard living straight talking nobullshit type guy, he said what was on his mind and didn’t mince his words whether it was about music, society or life in general. The world needs more Lemmy Kilmisters, R.I.P.
