Formed in London in 1968, Free are one of the most influential bands of the late 1960s British blues boom. The original lineup consisted of Paul Rodgers (vocals), Paul Kossoff (guitar), Andy Fraser (bass, piano), and Simon Kirke (drums, percussion).
Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke first crossed paths in the R&B band Black Cat Bones. Their shared love for American blues and wanted to create something new, and that they did, Paul Rogers in my opinion has the third greatest rock voice ever, I would have to have Chris Cornell and Robert Plant as my top 2, here is one of my favourite songs by Free.
The band played their first gig on April 19, 1968, at the Nag’s Head pub in Battersea, London. Their early stuff was raw and very heavily blues influenced. Free made their first album in 1970 (Fire and Water) this is considered the bands most iconic album, with Paul Rogers powerful singing and the soulful guitar work of Paul Kossoff it blends Rock and Blues with a touch of funk. (All Right Now) a song which I consider one of the best ever written was a massive hit, capturing the spirit essence of the time, heres the video.
Despite their success, Free faced numerous challenges. Internal tensions and personal struggles, particularly with Paul Kossoff’s drug addiction, led to the band’s initial breakup in 1971. They got back together for a short time in 1972 then split up again in 1973, The band seemed to struggle with the pressures of fame, and with Paul Kossoff’s declining health due to drug addiction particularly his struggles with heroin further contributed to the disintegration of the band.
Free’s influence on rock music is undeniable. Their blend of blues and hard rock paved the way for future generations of musicians. Paul Kossoff’s guitar style was known for a heavy blues influence, often described as raw and soulful set him apart from other guitarists at the time, his vibrato was awesome, and he had a unique spacing in his solos that would emphasise the important notes giving his solos feel and impact.
Free’s journey was marked by incredible highs and devastating lows, but their contribution to music remains timeless. Their ability to channel raw emotion into their music and their commitment to the blues have cemented their place in rock history. As we listen to classics like “All Right Now” and “Wishing Well,” we are reminded of the enduring power of their music and the legacy they left behind.

My brothers still listen to “All Right Now!” Great song.
Greatest band ever; and the main model I use when (attempting to) write for my band Bessemer Saints.
Small correction, tho': "Fire And Water" was Free's third album, not their first; their first was called "Tons Of Sobs". BS covers the song "Walk In My Shadow" from it.
